1. Valderrama, Hole 17 — The Lake Monster
No list of difficult holes in southern Spain starts anywhere else. The par-4 17th at Real Club Valderrama is a dogleg that has made grown men weep at the Ryder Cup. Water guards the green on two sides, and the prevailing wind off the hills adds an extra layer of cruelty. Anything short lands in the water. Anything long runs off a slick green into a near-unplayable lie. Par feels like a birdie.

2. La Quinta Golf, Hole 3 — The Vertical Challenge
Nestled in the hills above Puerto Banús, La Quinta’s third hole demands a tee shot over a deep ravine to a narrow fairway that tilts sharply left. The elevation change — a 60-metre drop from tee to landing zone — makes club selection a complete guessing game, especially when the Poniente wind swings in from the Atlantic. Three is possible. Seven is equally possible.

3. Finca Cortesín, Hole 10 — The Signature Statement
Host to the Volvo World Match Play Championship, Finca Cortesín is immaculate by design. The par-4 10th is where that design turns sinister. A vast bunker system on the right is visible from the tee and draws your eye — which is exactly where the architect wants it. Miss left and you’re in scrub. Miss right and you’ll be raking for five minutes. It’s a psychological as much as a physical test.

4. Marbella Club Golf Resort, Hole 7 — Blind Faith
This is the hole where first-timers reach for their phone to check if they’re on the right course. The tee shot on the 7th is completely blind — you aim at a marker post, trust the line, and hope. What awaits on the other side of the ridge is a gorgeous but unforgiving green protected by three bunkers and a steep run-off. Veterans know to aim two feet right of the post. You didn’t hear that from us.

5. Atalaya Golf — New Course, Hole 18 — The Walk of Shame Finisher
You’ve played 17 solid holes. You’re one over. You start thinking the round is in the bag. Then Atalaya’s 18th introduces itself. A long par-4 that plays into the prevailing wind, with an approach to a two-tier green that can send your ball careening from top to bottom in an instant. Three-putts here are routine. The 19th hole was invented because of finishes like this one.
