Calanova Golf Club

Calanova doesn't do subtle. Carved into the hills above La Cala de Mijas by Manuel Piñero and completed in 2005, this is a course that trades on drama — sweeping panoramic views over the Mediterranean, dramatic elevation changes that make a buggy less of a luxury and more of a necessity, and a set of greens that will humble anyone relying on GPS yardage alone (the buggies famously don't show distances, so bring your own rangefinder or a good caddie). It's a genuine test even at a relatively modest length, and the recently upgraded clubhouse and pro shop have turned the whole experience up a notch. Play it on a clear day and the views alone are worth the green fee — the golf is a serious bonus.

Calanova sits above La Cala de Mijas in the Valle del Golf area, roughly 20 minutes from Marbella and 35 minutes from Málaga Airport via the AP-7 motorway (exit at Mijas Costa / La Cala). The course is signposted from the A-7 coastal road; a hire car is strongly recommended given the hillside approach roads.
